The film, set during the early part of the Spanish civil war involves young Galician Moncho who as the film progresses inadvertently  becomes involved in the fierce stand off between Republicans and Nationalists.

Borrowing from the collection of short stories Que me queres, amor?  the director takes three of these and blends them into a charming film which as suggested gets increasingly bitter as the strongly catholic mother takes sides against her Republican husband who has the same standpoint as Moncho's teacher Don Gregorio.

A very popular film and one in its limited outlook on the Civil War helps us understand its underlying cause more easily.
