Truffaut's occupation novel is multi-layered in its origins.  After successfully conveying the end of the studio system by filming La nuit américaine he decided to turn his attention to the intricacies of the theatre.

Rather than setting the theatre in the present day he incorporated it into the German occupation.   The theatre director, a Jew, is holed up in the basement whilst his wife undertakes the management of the latest play.

Belying his Nouvelle Vague origins, Truffaut decided to film Le dernier metro in a studio so the whole film feels rather artificial, almost like a play in its own right-maybe this was the intention, layering the artificiality.

The relationships between the principal three players is a love triangle which is characteristic of Truffaut .

With so many different aspects of human relationships, wartime life (collaboration, censorship. anti-Semitism) and the theatre to discuss, this is a very interesting film to study.
