This biopic of Edith Piaf the legendary French singer, who had she lived a generation later who have been part of the 27 club, traces her life from childhood to her death.   The story incorporates events that may or may not have happened;  Piaf's own account of her own childhood are said to be fanciful.

Later events occurred in the public eye such as her affair with boxer Marcel Cerdan which ended so tragically.  Marion Cotillard playing the grown up Piaf is more than capable of expressing the full range of emotional reaction as each tragedy and triumph unfolds.

Despite her height she manages to persuade us that she is the singer, although what could replace the original black and white cinematography of the iconic performance of "Je ne regrette rien" at the Olympia?

La vie en rose represents a whole sub-genre of French cinema which has highlighted the lives of many of its cultural icons such as Chanel, Claude François and Serge Gainsbourg.
