WHY LE UN HEBDO?

I was first attracted to purchase Le Un when I saw the  edition "Banlieues, retour sur un apartheid" which seemed very relevant to the new A level topics. I was very impressed by the presentation of the periodical-it comes in A4 format, has 16 pages and folds out into a double-sided A0 sheet.  The graphics are striking, including drawn images of the writers as well as a weekly cartoon-format infographic summarising the week's theme.   Reading the wide range of texts of different lengths and styles was straightforward and I immediately saw this as a boon for A level students and the personal development of teachers.

To cut a long story short, I was so impressed that I went to see Eric Fottorino, the founder and editor of Le Un, and we arranged for a free copy of the paper to be sent to schools teaching A level French.  I chose an issue I thought would interest British schools, namely the title you should have received on Parcoursup, the controversial new selection process, roughly equivalent to UCAS.  You will be able to see for yourself whether you think I was right.

I think, and teachers to whom I have shown the paper agree, that the online library of back copies would be a perfect addition to the school library and that it would be a great boon for preparing the Individual Research Project.   There is an eclectic range of topics with something to appeal to all tastes.

Individual research project

It would be interesting to formulate a question around the fairness of this system which is designed to change the way university applications work.  At the moment 80% of French students pass their Bac in either a general or a technical branch and then can, theoretically, apply for anything at all-this results in 60% of those with the Bac dropping out of higher education with no degree, many falling by the way side in the first year.  Students are currently protesting that the new system is no better than the old one.
