Written in 1967, this entrancing, autobiographical novel is based on the lives of children, who were evacuated from the Basque country to France and Belgium during the Spanish civil war. The author evokes the hardships which the children suffered, as well as the emergence of a range of archetypal characters. The eponymous tree of the title refers to the Guernica oak, around which leaders gathered together to pledge respect for the rights and privileges of the area's citizens.
