Although perhaps too long and complex for students at A-level, this fascinating novel will reward those who put the effort in to read it in the original Spanish.  A world-wide bestseller when it came out, readers were spellbound by the multidimensional nature of the book; the father who takes his son to the secret bookstore, El Cementerio de los Libros Olvidados, from which he is allowed to take one title, the search for the author Carax.  We are never quite sure whether things are true or not.

The story is set in the context of post-civil war Barcelona. There, the constant threat of danger lends the narrative a tension which never lets up, as police officer Fumero tries to track down Daniel and his friend Fermin, a former government agent.

The theme of repression during the Franco era is well represented and would be an interesting topic for study.
