This incredibly violent Mexican-American film captures the desperate atmosphere of the Mexican gangland subculture.   The main protagonist Smiley is initiated violently into a gang by executing a member of another gang.  Things go from bad to worse with the gang getting involved in robbing would be immigrants hiding on a train going towards the US border.

There is little to warm the heart in this thoroughly pessimistic film which shows the lengths to which people will go to preserve their own sense of honour, to escape poverty and to preserve their own life.

The film received many awards.
