Written in the DDR originally as a play, Die neuen Leiden des jungen W. reworks the Goethe original which was so influential at the start of the Romantic period throughout Europe. Like many young people in the former DDR Edgar felt that socialist society was not doing him any favours and he just didn't fit into any of the moulds cast for him; the young Pioniere, his apprenticeship-all were anathema to him. He therefore runs off to Berlin where he comes into contact with the Goethe novella Die Leiden des jungen Werther, quotations from which pepper the novel. Written when Edgar is already dead, from causes unknown, the narrative consists of flashbacks to his past life and conversations about him by his acquaintances. Basically a social critique of DDR society couched in such a way as to avoid criticism the short novel is fascinating book to study, showing the claustrophobic world in full fling, whereas Der geteilte Himmel shows the hemmed in DDR as it gets going and Goodbye Lenin shows it as it comes to an end.
