Considered by some to be the best play of the 20th century, Mutter Courage, was written in a month in 1939 by Brecht. An anti-war play, Brecht sets the action in the brutal thirty years war of the 17th century when much of Europe was laid to waste by confrontation between catholic and protestant states. Very modern in its staging with frequent musical interventions, the play concerns Anna Fierling, Mutter Courage, and her three children. Anna cynically attaches her fortunes to the war by supplying the army with its needs; she also offers up her children who all eventually die as a result. The 12 sections of the play each represent a year of the war, during which period, Anna who is seeking only profit, swaps sides as fortunes ebb and flow. Brecht was ultimately disappointed by the effect of the play as rather than finding Mutter Courage reprehensible audiences identified with her tribulations. Clearly this play will appeal to classes with a thespian bent who are sympathetic to high art.
