Part of a fairly recent tradition of making biopics of the lives of anti-Nazi German heroes (such as Bonhoeffer, 2003) Sophie Scholl-die letzten Tage by Rothemund follows a previous version of her life Die weisse Rose. Don't confuse them! Very sparely filmed the work has a horrible air of inevitability about as the young student sibling Sophie and Hans Scholl type up the tract which they reproduce to post out to chosen recipients throughout the country. The fateful decision is taken to deposit remaining tracts condemning the Nazi regime at Munich university. Sophie and Hans are intercepted even before they leave the building and are subjected to questioning which reveals conclusively that they are the culprits; we do enjoy however Sophie's moral victory over her interrogator who clearly recognizes the truth of what his victim is saying but can't or won't do anything about it. The film provides a valuable message in pointing out that it is not necessary to give in to a totalitarian state, although it does require the willingness to sacrifice oneself to some degree. Interestingly, Geschwister Scholl Schule has become the most common school name in Germany, a fitting memorial of an outstanding act of bravery.
