Sometimes we can be put off literature from previous centuries thinking it may be boring or stuffy:   Candide certainly doesn't fit into this category and one could imagine it being made into an action-packed adventure movie complete with multi-levelled video-games.   Published secretly in 1759, Voltaire's work notably attacked the optimistic view of the world put forth by the philosopher Leibniz;  he takes a poke at religion, governments in a satirical way, drawing on events  of the time such as the renowned Portugese earthquake of 1755 and the seven years war to illustrate that there is little room for optimism in the world.

Candide is being brought up in a civilized fashion at the court of Baron Baron Thunder-ten-Tronckh when his world is shattered as he is banished for kissing the beautiful Cunégonde.  There follows the most action packed sequence of events in literature as over thirty episodes Candide, Pangloss his teacher and Cunégonde are woven in and out of a narrative designed to argue philosphical points of view on religious and moral issues.

Said to be the most studied book in French literature, partly in the light of the importance of Voltaire's modern, liberal manner of thinking and partly due to the simple pleasure in reading such an extraordinary story, the novel's level of language is approachable by reasonably able students at advanced level.
