Although ostensibly about the nature of faith and how to approach death, this very short book is also strangely life-affirming. Eric Emmanuel-Schmitt's 10 year old protagonist, Oscar, realizes that he is going to succumb to his leucaemia as he undergoes treatment in a children's hospital. However, the fantastic imaginative support he receives from his "dame rose" hospital visitor Mamie-Rose enables him to climb onto a spiritual plain from which he is able to make the transition from terrified child to mentally prepared adult. The text is essentially composed of fourteen letters written by Oscar, initially a non-believer, to God and analysing his last days. The letters, at once, dramatic, amusing and heart-wrenching are utterly engaging. Study of this book would be an excellent individual activity for gifted and talented children at GCSE, a suitable "transition" text or piece of individual study to be presented in the oral examination Select from the drop-down menu below to choose which variant of the materials you would like to purchase.
