Azouz Begag, son of Algerian parents, lived in a shanty town in the suburbs of Lyon much like the one depicted in Le gone du châaba. The story depicts the vile conditions experienced by immigrants all over France as immigrant workers contributed to the 30 years of fast economic development. Despite the miserable conditions in which they live the young immigrants head off to school convinced that they can make something of themselves and this certainly proves to be the case for Begag who after becoming an electrician went into politics and was in government and has become a prolific writer. Written in very straightforward language the book has much to commend it for study and there is an accompanying film.
