The prolific Amélie Nothomb is the nearest thing currently to a celebrity author in the French speaking world. Daughter of a Belgian diplomat and brought up from a young age in Japan her work often has an oriental slant. During the early 90's Japan was riding high on a booming economy and Japanese language and culture were attracting considerable attention in the west. Since the subsequent economic slowdown China has tended to take over the mantle but Stupeur et tremblements was written within that context. The female narrator arrives to begin her new job in a large Japanese corporation high up in a skyscraper overlooking the city. Right from the start she commits cultural faux pas despite speaking the language fluently; she cannot quite believe the cultural conventions which underpin this very traditional society. Dazzled by her stylish line manager, Amélie does her best to fit in, not realizing the effect her good intentions have on those around her in the pecking order. The resulting clash of cultures changes her attitude towards a culture she had loved. Short and approchable this novella has much to recommend it particularly for students with an economic or international bent. .
