The award winning account of Che Guevara's journey by motorcyle around South America with his friend Alberto Granada.  The two young adventure seekers set off seeking adventure but as they go on gradually uncover for themselves the poverty and injustice facing native Americans throughout the region.

Guevara identifies increasingly with the suffering and whilst working with a leper colony for three weeks abandons rubber gloves inorder to identify more closely with his patients.

We see his increasing concern develop into the passion which will turn him into the full-blown revolutionary who will fight alongside Fidel Castro.

A fascinating and inspiring film with a rich beauty.

This heart-warming story of young Pablo shows how miserable he is at home where he is abused by his father-until that is he befriends Alfredo who has a normal family.   Pablo rapidly gains in confidence and happiness as he becomes involved with these new acquaintances.  Plenty to discuss in this very human tale about the difference successful relationships make in the life of a young child.

Set in the period after the end of the Spanish Civil War when Franco's police and troops are rooting out opposition from rebels, the film combines a fantastical fairy tale with the stark reality of the time.   A young girl, whose destiny is to return to her regal position in the underworld comes with her mother to a mill where she encounters the faun who sets her the task of finding the keys which will enable her to escape her earthly existence.

Del Torro in a real tour de force weaves the fantastical story together with the incredibly violent present to produce a stunning film which leaves one emotionally exhausted by the end.

This is understandably the most studied film in the UK and one which is a challenge both to watch and analyse.

The film, set during the early part of the Spanish civil war involves young Galician Moncho who as the film progresses inadvertently  becomes involved in the fierce stand off between Republicans and Nationalists.

Borrowing from the collection of short stories Que me queres, amor?  the director takes three of these and blends them into a charming film which as suggested gets increasingly bitter as the strongly catholic mother takes sides against her Republican husband who has the same standpoint as Moncho's teacher Don Gregorio.

A very popular film and one in its limited outlook on the Civil War helps us understand its underlying cause more easily.

This shocking film concerns a group of 13 female Republican sympathizers who following the defeat of their side by General Franco are tracked down, arrested and imprisoned.  Filmed in 2007 as Spanish culture has gradually turned the spotlight more on the occurences of the civil war, the film shows to what extent the female prisoners were tortured.

Based on a true story, the film leaves us in no doubt about the nature of the Franco régime.  Now most of those involved in persecution at the time are dead it has become possible to lift the lid of this most intolerant and cruel of times.

This tragic Chilean film is framed in the run up to the overthrow of socialist president Salvador Allende and the take over by Augusto Pinochet.   Priviledged Gonzalo befriends Pedro Machuca who lives in a shanty town but is introduced into the private school by socially conscious head Father McEnroe.

Relationships between rich and poor are tested to the limit as the wave of chaos that is the overthrow of Allende unfurls over the city.   Machuca gets himself into trouble and we witness the start of a repressive regime which has no time for the poor.

Not well know outside Chile, this film is one that is important in presenting the events of a very troubled period of history.

This very touching film has become ever more relevant as debate over euthenasia has intensified with some countries like the Netherlands legalizing it in certain circumstances.

The true story of Ramón Sampedro, who paralysed himself accidentally when diving from a cliff face,  we see his character dreaming of his former life, flying in his mind through the landscape.  Javier Bardem plays this tranquil yet very determined man whose life is dedicated to assisted suicide,

Julia, a lawyer, sympathizes with him and tries to get the courts to agree to him putting an end to his life whilst Rosa, a friend who lives locally, wants to make him realize how valuable he is to his family and how good life can be.

A popular choice with students over the last 10 years, this film is very worthy of study.

Set in the deep south of Spain, the thrust of the film reminds one of Graham Greene's famous quote about corruption in Nice-"A sunny place for shady people".

This well received thriller involves a bank manager, Modesto Pardos, whose bank is raided and the safe deposit boxes emptied.   When he examines the contents of one of the boxes he finds evidence regarding circumstances leading to  the death of his daughter seven years earlier.

Pardos sets out to avenge his daughter not knowing initially that he is going to be coming up against a corrupt former chief of police and a Mafia boss anxious to get back their incriminating papers.  Although feeling rather like a tele-film at times, the work stands out for its understated portrayal of a determined, professional normal person striving to achieve justice for his family.

The abuse and corruption of power are at the heart of this film which does lend it importance in terms of a universal theme.  The clarity of language is very clear and the version below has comprehensive subtitles for the hard of hearing which will help language students.   It also has a "Making of" bonus.

This exciting film is based on the life of Mikel Lejarza, a secret agent, who worked for Franco's fascist government in its final years.   The so-called wolf's mission was to track down members of the Basque separatist ETA movement, which he did successfully infiltrating approximately a quarter of the organisation.  He prevented a mass break out from prison which was intended to precede a series of attacks throughout the country.

However, The Wolf's masters turned on him and and betrayed him but despite this he continued his mission until his position became untenable with both ETA and the secret services on his heels.  He therefore made himself vanish from the face of the earth by changing his identity.

Young Ramon finds it difficult to make friends because his father is constantly moving the family around Spain.  When he arrives in Seville, he is starting to go through puberty and is finding life very difficult in a society that is very repressive under the fascist Franco régime.   Despite trying to stay out of the limelight, Ramon attracts the attention of David a bully and his friends.  A young priest comes to his assistance.

The historical period in which this film is set is of interest as a setting for a very human drama.

This film marked Almodóvar's entry into the big time.  The film starts tragically when Esteban, son of the main protagonist Manuel an Argentinian nurse, is killed on his seventeenth birthday.   She allows her son's heart to be transplanted and then goes to Barcelona to find Esteban's father, Lola, who knew nothing of having a child.

In Almodóvar style the plot then launches into a complex web of events involving a range of disparate characters and attitudes. This is the director dealing with identity in the modern world where straight, gay, bisexual and transexual people have to work things out together so it could be challenging to the more sheltered student but it certainly has a lot to discuss.

Dealing with a subject which is not often brought up in our media, this film on child soldiers is set in El Salvador in Central America in a small village.  Both the national government and the rebels are both trying to recruit boys from as young as 12 years old to fight on their site, whilst the families, church and school are trying to prevent this happening.

The film is seen through the eyes of Chava who is coming up to the appropriate age to be taken.  He helps raise money to feed the family so his loss would be particularly detrimental to the family.   The anarchy and brutality of what this young boy has to live through are well presented in this thought provoking film which is characteristic of the unstable nature of small central American countries in the 70's and 80's.

In this popular comedy, Rafa, a native of Seville, falls for a Basque girl, Amaia whom he fails to seduce.  However when she leaves her purse behind on her return, he uses the excuse to follow her back to her native area the Basque country.

On his arrival a series of events leads to Rafa adopting a Basqua persona complete with 8 names.   This comic romp playing on regional stereotypes is the most lighthearted choice for the cinema option.

This incredibly violent Mexican-American film captures the desperate atmosphere of the Mexican gangland subculture.   The main protagonist Smiley is initiated violently into a gang by executing a member of another gang.  Things go from bad to worse with the gang getting involved in robbing would be immigrants hiding on a train going towards the US border.

There is little to warm the heart in this thoroughly pessimistic film which shows the lengths to which people will go to preserve their own sense of honour, to escape poverty and to preserve their own life.

The film received many awards.

Based in the La Mancha area in which Almodóvar was brought up, Volver has a stellar cast of female actress who play out a film where once again the female condition and  identity are key themes.   We see the women of the town spring-cleaning the graves of their kinsfolk as the film opens and then are drawn into a world where women rule.  Raimunda and Soledad, two sisters each have a drama unfold around them;  Paula, Raimunda's daughter kills her father, or step father, when he attempts to rape her and the women's mother, who is supposedly dead hitches a lift to Madrid in her daughter's boot.

These parallel events set in a motion a series of events which involve scenes of realism, melodrama and magical realism in a film that always fascinates.   There is much to discuss in this fast paced, very human film which was very well received when it came out.
