This short, very accessible play set in a fictional Andorra, rather than the real one, takes place as a menacing army gathers on the borders threatening the existence of anyone who happens to be Jewish.

Andri who was adopted as a baby by his teacher father thinks he is Jewish and as the play progresses is imbued with all the stereotypical characteristics of a Jewish person.   Although he is an excellent woodworker he is pulled out of the workshop to sell the furniture products-because that is what Jews do.

A range of characters come forward during the play to deny their role in the eventual death of Andri, echoing the institutions of German society before and during World War 2.

The play like other post war plays commonly studied examines the collective guilt of the German nation and how it is up to individuals to assert themselves when unfair persecution is taking place.

Originally written in the early fifties as a radio play, Biedermann und die Brandstifter, once it emerged in its current form quickly established itself as a commonly performed play and as a school text.

With its range of heavy duty themes, ranging from the individual's power to help shape his own destiny, to the need to display humanity to one's fellow man, the play challenges us in a context which is general enough for us to be able to relate it to a range of potentially cataclysmic situations, whether it be nuclear war or climate change.

Like other plays produced in the 50's in Germany, assigning a genre is difficult as ironic humour transcends a play which is only ever going to have one outcome-and not a happy one.   The intervention of the choir at the end of each scene helps lend the play a transcendent quality taking it straight back to the Greek tragedies.

Written in 1955, Böll's Novelle Das Brot der frühen Jahre is a very interesting work tracing a day in the life of washing machine engineer Walter Fendrich.   The events happening throughout the book relate to his going to the station to pick up a young lady, Hedwig, coming to the big city for the first time and what transpires when he takes her home.  The events are intermingled with Walter looking back on his former life going back to the war.  Much of this period involved the school boy, then the apprentice which he became making every effort to get his hands on food, particularly bread, hence the title.

The Novelle covers a period where the horrors of war are still apparent and fresh in the memory, at the same time as hinting at the emerging materialism, with the washing machine symbolising a whole raft of other consumer goods which are coming through the system and contributing to German's Wirtschaftswunder of the 1950s and 60s.

Böll's political leanings come through clearly in the novel where Walter is becoming only too aware of the profits that his Mittelstand employer, Wickweber, is making, much of at it as his expense.

The seamless manner in which the novel's themes interweave makes it   a very rewarding read and one which lends itself to character development.

First played in 1940 when Brecht had moved to the US due to Nazi persecution, Das Leben des Galilei deals with the latter part of the scientist's life.

On learning of the invention of the telescope which is on sale in Amsterdam, Galilei manages to create his own version of it and to pass it off as his own invention.

Galilei goes against church doctrine by claiming that based on his observations with the telescope the earth rotates around the sun along with the other planets.   The resulting conflict sabotages his daughter's wedding because Galilei refuses to go back on his teachings based on his heretical findings.

When pressed by the Vatican, Galilei decides that he is not prepared to be tortured and he recants his teachings, despite the opposition and surprise of his students.

Galilei passes his book "Two new sciences" to Andrea, a former student and asks him to get it published outside of Italy.   Galilei admits to him that his actions in giving into the authorities was not some kind of heroic act but self-preservation.

With the invention of the atom bomb and the ethical concerns surrounding the possibility of global destruction, there were clear parallels with the time of Galilei which Brecht recognized, rewriting the play to incorporate this new state of affairs.

A town awaits at the station the arrival of its most famous and richest inhabitant who has the power to save it from terminal decline.  Already she has bailed out other towns in the locality and everyone is expectant that now it is Güllen's turn.

On Clara Zachanassian's arrival, however, it quickly transpires that she has a bone to pick with her childhood lover Alfred who is part of the welcoming committee and has apparently forgotten why the multi-millionaire should want revenge on him.

The play demonstrates the extent to which money can corrupt even the most outwardly honest and well-meaning communities.  We witness the ardent support of the town degenerating as the screw is turned.

Still one of the most popular German plays, Der Besuch is frequently performed; it has been converted into a musical and been filmed on a number of occasions.

One of the most significant works by an East German writer, Christa Wolf's Der geteilte Himmel offers a rich introduction into the feelings of the people at the time.   A challenging read for A level students, containing a massive amount of difficult vocabulary and complex ideas, the book will reward those who take the time and effort, handsomely.

Using the device of introducing a couple, each of whom favours opposing sides of the ideological divide Wolf is able to present the increasingly fraught issues of the two Germanys in a highly personal, yet detailed manner.

Rita a country girl, training to be a teacher experiences at first hand the world of the factory as she carries out her compulsory work experience in a train works.   She experiences the life of the so-called Brigade, who collaborate on jobs whether it be on a building site on a farm or on a factory.

Her boyfriend, chemical engineer, Manfred is disillusioned with the communist system and wants out.  He makes good his escape before the building of the Berlin wall.   The real drama of the novel ensues from this point.

The story is told retrospectively by Rita who is in hospital.

This would be an extremely good choice for a student wishing to study European history or with an interest in the complexities of literary techniques.

The prologue of the play is set in the Soviet union during a dispute over land allocation.  We experience a folk tale within that story of the young heroine Grusha adopting the Governor's son Michael following the former's beheading after a coup.

In a story punctuated with musical interludes, Grusha brings up the baby in a village where she marries an old peasant to avoid suspicion.   Simon a soldier who had been entranced with her in her previous life catches up with her.

In a scene redolent of the story of Solomon and the baby, the judge Azdak confronts Grusha and Michael's mother with an agonizing decision, one must forgo him or he will be torn in half.

Despite its complexity and the difficulty in staging it, The Caucasian Chalk Circle is considered to be one of Brecht's best works and is one of the most regularly staged German plays.

Written in 1995 by law professor, Bernhard Schlink, Der Vorleser quickly established itself as an important work, dealing with the fading memories of those who had lived through the war and been involved either as active participants, as passive bystanders or people who looked the other way.

The novel starts off as the love story of a 15 year old boy who falls for the much older woman who helps him out when he is ill.  He is initially poorly placed to judge the woman, Hanna, as she reacts unexpectedly to what he considered to be perfectly normal statements or actions.  In hindsight the woman's behaviour is explained as the last phase of the book unfolds.

Parts of the novel, particularly those involving the court and judicial issues can be quite difficult to understand although the strength of the underpinning theme of the relationship between Michael and Hanna helps keep interest high, particularly when he discovers his former lovers two big secrets.

At 200 pages, the novel is quite a long read but it is a thoroughly absorbing one and one which will fascinate and enthral young people in the English speaking world has much as it has those in German speaking countries.

If the film with Kate Winslett is shown, it should be pointed out, if it's not obvious enough, that there are many significant differences between the two works as is usually the case.

It is well-known that Currywurst a popular snack consisting of a German hot dog with spicy sauce emerged at the end of the war.   This fascinating novel posits a Frau Brücker as the inventor of this famous snack.

The novel is written in the form of seven visits by the writer to an old peoples' home where the now elderly Frau Brücker lives.  The story takes off on its own as the story gets going, only occasionally coming back to the narrative framework.   She relates her life from the dying days of the war, in Hamburg, in 1945 when she met up with  Hermann Bremer, a sailor, who deserts and stays in her flat.   Although both married, the two conduct an affair but split up at the end of the war.

Following Bremer's departure, the 43 year old was to make the sale of her invention the Currywurst her trade mark.  When her husband returns from the war she throws him out and takes part in building a society that works differently from the one it preceded.

The novel is a very interesting interweaving of characters with external events and very accessible for sixth formers.  Probably also a reason for cooking German street food to give the right ambiance!

Written in the DDR originally as a play, Die neuen Leiden des jungen W. reworks the Goethe original which was so influential at the start of the Romantic period throughout Europe.

Like many young people in the former DDR Edgar felt that socialist society was not doing him any favours and he just didn't fit into any of the moulds cast for him;  the young Pioniere, his apprenticeship-all were anathema to him.

He therefore runs off to Berlin where he comes into contact with the Goethe novella Die Leiden des jungen Werther, quotations from which pepper the novel.

Written when Edgar is already dead, from causes unknown, the narrative consists of flashbacks to his past life and conversations about him by his acquaintances.

Basically a social critique of DDR society couched in such a way as to avoid criticism the short novel is fascinating book to study, showing the claustrophobic world in full fling, whereas Der geteilte Himmel shows the hemmed in DDR as it gets going and Goodbye Lenin shows it as it comes to an end.

In this 1974 novel by Heinrich Böll, housekeeper Katharina Blum becomes involved with Götten a man wanted by the police for robbery.   She helps him escape and then is investigated herself.

Due to the intervention of Die Zeitung, a fictitious newspaper based on Bild, journalist Tötges carries out interviews with everyone Katharina knows including her mother in hospital who dies the next day.

Tötges report of Katharina Blum portrays her as a revolutionary communist;  she takes revenge by inviting him to her flat and then killing him, whereupon she hands herself in.

Intended as an indictment of an over-intrusive and lying press, the novel is written in the form of a report by the narrator who introduces other sources of information into the narrative.

Not an easy read, the novel is a valuable one and one with clear parallels to the issues dealt with in the Leveson report in the UK of late.

The opening sentence of Franz Kafka's Die Verwandlung is one of the most well-known in literature yet the simplicity of it belies the rich and unknowable meaning of the work itself;   the number of interpretations of the novella testifies to its importance and underlying complexity.   It is possible to read the novella superficially almost as if were one watching a cartoon but a closer look at Kafka's family background and the situation of Jews in a city which was at the time half German and half Czech will pay dividends.   Kafka's work is now seen as some of the most important of the 20th century, defining the nature of a civilisation becoming increasingly alienated both at a family and societal level.

Published in 2003 this feel-good novel is set in the lost property office of a station where the main protagonist Henry Neff quickly settles in to a routine punctuated with unusual finds which culminate in friendship, the pursuit of an apparent criminel and other apparently random events.

The  novel seems to me to be an extended reflection on the nature of the stories we tell and the stories we live within our work place, our community and within an extended international context.   The author has set the book in an indeterminate town and in an indetermined time before the arrival of mobile phones when the typewriter still reigned:  it seems almost to be its own slightly other-worldly universe.

A linguistically accessible book for A level students, Fundbüro offers plenty of scope for the discussion of a wide range of themes.

This short, popular book was published in 1991 to help German adolescents comprehend the changes that were taking place within their reunited country.  It therefore attempts to cover what it felt like to be part of the socialist system in the former DDR, restricted and spied upon at the same time as demonstrating the the new liberties which were to unfold.

The first many western people knew of the rapidly evolving political situation was the site of east Germans crossing through to Austria via the Hungarian border and this is where the novel starts.   It is interesting to read what it felt like to be within a state from which travel was difficult but from which people were disappearing every day;  it is therefore a useful challenging document to get young people thinking about the freedoms they take for granted.

Apart from the inherent interest in the subject matter, Ich fühle mich so fifty fifty is also an excellent "trainer" novel in that the language is relatively straightforward with plenty of dialogue which is so valuable for language learners.

Considered by some to be the best play of the 20th century, Mutter Courage, was written in a month in 1939 by Brecht.  An anti-war play, Brecht sets the action in the brutal thirty years war of the 17th century when much of Europe was laid to waste by confrontation between catholic and protestant states.

Very modern in its staging with frequent musical interventions, the play concerns Anna Fierling, Mutter Courage, and her three children.    Anna cynically attaches her fortunes to the war by supplying the army with its needs;   she also offers up her children who all eventually die as a result.

The 12 sections of the play each represent a year of the war, during which period, Anna who is seeking only profit, swaps sides as fortunes ebb and flow.

Brecht was ultimately disappointed by the effect of the play as rather than finding Mutter Courage reprehensible audiences identified with her tribulations.

Clearly this play will appeal to classes with a thespian bent who are sympathetic to high  art.

Vladimir Kaminer's Russendisko, written in the early noughties, is a collection of 50 very short chapters cataloguing the experiences and impressions of  Vladimir from the time of his departure from Moscow through the early days of getting used to German life right through to the point where he and his wife ask themselves why they actually came-the answer being-for fun.

Now fully integrated into Berlin life and a popular broadcaster and disc jockey, Kaminer still very much gears his output to immigrants to Germany .   The book Russendisko is an excellent German language learning tool with its short chapters, ironic tone and straightforward language use.

With Berlin now one of the most popular cities in Europe again, this book is an excellent aid to feeling what makes the new Germany tick and as such will appeal to young internationally minded students.

This incredibly atmospheric novel, written by former Communist, Alfred Andersch traces a group of diverse, troubled people who are all on a mission in pre-war Germany.   All under threat in some way from the Nazi regime (die Anderen), they are heading to Rerik on the Baltic coast where fisherman Knudsen is readying himself to spirit them off to Sweden.

The communist, the sculpture unacceptable to the Nazis, the Jewish woman and all the other other protagonists take it in turn to come into focus through the narrator's omniscient view.

The book had a considerable amount of influence in the second half of the last century, being filmed twice and being studied in schools.  The level of language is very approachable for A level students and the number of themes which it covers makes it a very teachable novel.

Judith Hermann, a Berliner, trained to be a journalist but turned her attention to literature in the form of the short story.  Her first collection of short stories, Sommerhaus später was written whilsts she was benefiting from a stipend and was very well received by critics.   She was referred to as a Fräulein Wunder by Spiegel magazine .

The spare elegant style of the short stories is particularly suitable for students of the language.  The subject matter of her stories revolves around the lives of a listless Berlin population, uncertain of its role in life, isolated and emotionally detached, maybe typifying modern city life anywhere.

This short autobiographical novel by Thomas Mann set in the northern Germany of the late 19th century delves into the mind of the young artistically minded Tonio Kröger who feels alienated by being locked into his chosen vocation.  Mann felt that the character combined the romantic, adventurous temperament of the south with the more formal, rule bound nature of the north.
