This amusing film which appeared in 2011 is based around the life of a fairly typical family of Turkish Gastarbeiter and examines the theme of the cultural identity of immigrants in Germany.   Blending newsreel and well integrated reconstruction of the early days of the German Wirtschaftswunder when Turkish immigrants filled the huge gap in the labour market, the film shows how one family followed the father to Germany.   There is as one might expect a reasonable amount of Turkish spoken in the film between members of the family and the film deals sympathetically and at times hilariously with the clash of  cultures.

The paraonoic and despotic world of the former DDR is centrestage in this claustrophobic story of surveillance, love and deception.  When experienced Stasi officer Gerd Wiesler is assigned to spy on the house of prominent playwright Georg Dreyman he little suspects to what extent he is to become involved in the fate of this man and his partner Christa-Maria an ambitious actress.

In a multi-layered story we witness the totalitarian state in operation;  a careless quip or joke to the wrong person can end up in demotion or the loss of one's job.    One of Dreyman's fellow theatre friends can now no longer work and his own partner Christa is being blackmailed by a Stasi chief in order that she can continue to work.

Against this background, Wiesler is dragged into the increasingly tense relationship between Christa and Georg;  his loyalties are tested as things come to a head.

Besides being an extraordinarily rich film to study, Das Leben der anderen is a very interesting way of looking more closely at the DDR as a whole.

This marvellous film was made 50 years after the central event, Germany's victory in the 1954 world cup finals which took place in Bern, Switzerland. The social developments of the time play an equally large part in the narrative as Peter Lubanski the father of the family returns to Essen after 11 years of imprisonment in Russia.

The film opens with a group of friends including the main protagonist Mattes, waiting for the results of their favourite team Rot-Weiss Essen's latest match by pigeon post.  Subsequent results including the world cup matches themselves are delivered by a full range of communicational methods to Mattes whether it be through the radio or reenacted by the friends as they play football in the street.

The Heimkehrer Peter finds it incredibly difficult to identify with the world he finds on his return and most of the drama in the film derives from his clashes with his own family as he struggles to regain his confidence.   The inevitable reconciliation is thoughtfully and beautifully constructed resulting in the ultimate feelgood factor film.

At the same time as being an excellent drama, one is also immersed in the period of reconstruction as the Wirtschaftswunder starts to kick off;  one realizes suddenly that Adi Dassler who is showing Herberger, the national team manager his latest design for screw-in studs is the founder of Adidas, part and parcel of German's economic success story.

This is an excellent film to study on several levels.  The alevelgerman.com resources are designed to help build excellent knowledge of the narrative and to provide plenty of grammatical exemplification at the same time as reinforcing familiarity with the characters and plot.

Extracts of Hitler's rants from this film have become very popular for retranslation on youtube.     Some critics have claimed that with such a reconstruction, by making Hitler the under-dog, there is a danger of making him a sympathetic figure.

Seen through the eyes of young secretary Traudl Junge who has been frequently interviewed about the war years, the story sticks very closely to the actual events of the last days of the fall of Berlin.

Bruno Ganz who embodies Hitler to perfection captures the mental collapse of the man who once had most of Europe at this feet.    Public scenes which had been photographed and used as propaganda are reconstructed and more intimate ones such as the suicide of the Goebbels family demonstrate the sheer fanaticism of the protagonists.

We all know what is going to happen in this very high class biopic but as mentioned there are ethical issues around why the film has been made and what has been done to ensure that it does not in any way glorify the memory of Hitler.

West Germany in the 60's was a hotbed of radicalism with demonstrations and terrorist attacks by highly politicized activists being a regular phenomenon.   In this film, idealistic friends Jan and Peter team up with the aim of doing their bit to demonstrate to rich "capitalists" that they will not always have things their own way.  Their raids on rich people's homes are designed to unsettle.  However things get out of hand when Jule, who has a genuine grievance against a millionaire who has ruined her life, trashes his house, going beyond the normal limits the group imposes on itself.

In the unintended dénouement the young people are forced to examine the way they think about themselves and their view of revolution.

This film is a good vehicle for discussing the way the modern western world functions  and the role the individual has in making it a better place to live in.

A schoolteacher uses a Projektwoche to try out a social experiment with his class;   introducing small changes  which form part of the way a fascist, totalitarian state works, he starts to indoctrinate the pupils, with the exception of one girl who refuses to be influenced.

As the week goes by the class now wearing a common uniform ( a white shirt) start to exhibit tendencies which are redolent of the Nazis and all are feeling buoyed up by the sense of a common cause.   There is considerable unease amongst the rest of the staff and amongst families as the experiment progresses towards a shocking dénouement.

Will British students take a film seriously where a class of bejeaned teenagers become more and more like them over the course of a mere week?    A hefty suspension of disbelief is required as we wonder just what is happening in the rest of the time the class is together for so much brainwashing to happen.

An interesting film to discuss and it would inevitably lead to discussion of indoctrination by extremists of any persuasion, a very current topic.

Confrontations between police and protesters are becoming more and more violent as the last days of the DDR approach.  Alex's ideologically committed mother suffers a heart attack in the street during a demonstration and by the time she has recovered the Berlin wall has fallen and the two Germanys are rapidly coming together.

Alex is warned that any shock could kill his mother so in order to protect her from the perils of capitalism he works with his friends and family to pretend that things are still as they were before.   Junge Pioniere parade infront of her bed singing communist songs, DDR food is put infront of her to eat and Alex and his friend go so far as to produce doctored versions of the TV news for her.

The film is both amusing and informative, presenting as it does a considerable amount of  detail about life in the former DDR and about die Wende.    One of the most popular German films currently being studied by English students, the film merits study even if filmically maybe it "over eggs the omelette" a little.

This incredibly moving film by director Doris Dörie is set partly in Germany and partly in Japan and concerns an elderly couple.  When Trudi learns that her husband is terminally ill she organizes a visit to their busy children in Berlin and from there to the Baltic sea, where she suddenly dies.

Rudi, on finding out that his wife had always been fascinated by the Japanese Butoh dance style decides to fulfil her bucket list wish by proxy and  visit his son who lives in Japan. Rudi's son is not very welcoming and he spends his time in the park where it is cherry blossom time.

In the park he meets and befriends an eighteen year old girl, Yu,  who has suffered similar circumstances to him;  she helps him find his way around Tokyo and then accompanies him to Mount Fuji, a place his wife had always wanted to visit.   Despite getting more ill by the day Rudi is determined to fulfil the final spiritual connection with his wife which he manages.

The film demonstrates the intolerance within families as after an emotional climax, we see the children complaining about their father's odd behaviour in his final days.

The dialogue of the film is in German, Japanese and English;   Yu and Rudi communicate in English inorder to make themselves understood.

As might be expected from the title Lola rennt is a fast paced film;  despite this it is packed with subtle messages and philosphical ideas.   Lola's boyfriend Manni has left 100 000 marks in a bag in an underground train and if he doesn't deliver them to his drug baron boss within twenty minutes he is going to be shot and killed at the meeting point outside a supermarket.

Lola promises to find the money and get it to him before the time is up;  instead of this being a single operation however, Twyker offers three separate versions of Lola's exploit, each proceeding and ending very differently.   On the run, Lola meets the same people at slightly different points affecting their lives in a different way on each occasion which we see through flash-forwards.

Borrowing images and ideas from other well-known film makers such as Hitchcock the film is nevertheless very engaging and individual in its own right and from the cinematic point of view very interesting to study as it uses many different devices to get its message across in a look that sometimes feel like an extended pop-video.

This long, episodic film taces the life and times of a Jewish couple Walter, a lawyer and his wife Jettel who move to Kenya in 1938 to avoid persecution by the Nazis in Germany.  Jettel finds the transformation difficult whilst daughter Regina becomes immersed in the local culture.  The only other German around is Süsskind who has been in Africa a long time.

Following the outbreak of war the family is broken up with Walter joining the British army and Regina going off to boarding school in England.  Jettel finally gets to grips with African culture and takes over the farm which she manages competently.  At the end of the war the family reunites and must decide whether it is going to stay in Africa and continue where it left off or return to Germany where Walter has been offered a job as a judge.

Feelings run high and in the emotional last part of the film hard decisions have to be made.

Beautiful cinematography and music make this a very watchable film even if it has been criticized for not having a traditional filmic structure.

Part of a fairly recent tradition of making biopics of the lives of anti-Nazi German heroes (such as Bonhoeffer, 2003) Sophie Scholl-die letzten Tage by Rothemund follows a previous version of her life Die weisse Rose.   Don't confuse them!

Very sparely filmed the work has a horrible air of inevitability about as the young student sibling Sophie and Hans Scholl  type up the tract which they reproduce to post out to chosen recipients throughout the country.   The fateful decision is taken to deposit remaining tracts condemning the Nazi regime at Munich university.

Sophie and Hans are intercepted even before they leave the building and are subjected to questioning which reveals conclusively that they are the culprits;  we do enjoy however Sophie's moral victory over her interrogator who clearly recognizes the truth of what his victim is saying but can't or won't do anything about it.

The film provides a valuable message in pointing out that it is not necessary to give in to a totalitarian state, although it does require the willingness to sacrifice oneself to some degree.   Interestingly, Geschwister Scholl Schule has become the most common school name in Germany, a fitting memorial of an outstanding act of bravery.
