Written in February 1944 when Anouilh was becoming conscious of the sacrifices of those resisting the German occupation of France, Antigone, based on the Greek Sophocles play of the same name, demonstrates the heroism of the eponymous character against the tyranny of Créon, the king.

Having just defeated Antigone's two rebellious brothers, sons of Oedipus Créon allows one to be honoured whilst the other must lie where he fell on the field of battle as a warning.   Antigone, despite the fact that she is shortly due to marry Créon's son, insists on ensuring that her brother is tolerably buried.

This play then puts Antigone at odds with Créon in a tragic, heroic role as is typical of the Greek theatre.

A short, straightforward play with accessible language this would be an interesting work to cover, not least due to the ambiguity of the message;  when the play was performed, some took it for an apology for collaboration whilst others saw it as Anouilh saw it, a protest against misguided leadership, such as that of Pétain, the head of the Vichy government.

About the novel

This short novel written during the summer holidays by 18 year old Françoise Sagan was a succès de scandale in 1952. Conservative French society took a dim view of a young girl befriending and then bedding an older young man ; the fact that she was also prepared to go to extraordinary lengths to get her own way to preserve her privileged relationship with her father raised eyebrows.

The criticism was to no avail as the novel carried all before it both in France and abroad. All 17 year olds could identify with the feelings of Cécile the narrator, who is spending her summer holiday on the Côte d'Azur in the lap of luxury with her adored father. When he announces that he is inviting a female friend of his deceased wife to spend some time at the villa alongside the glamourous girlfriend with whom he is already sleeping, we all know there are going to be fireworks.

Inhabiting Cécile's head we become increasingly infuriated at her pretentiousness and the selfish manner in which she begins to manipulate situations in order to get what she wants. Generations of students have enjoyed this novel which certainly lives up to its enigmatic title.

With wars constantly being in the headlines it is fascinating to read accounts of how people coped during previous conflicts; in the case of this collection, the nature of occupation by a hated foreign power. The invasion of France by the Prussian army did not last long but it left a lasting impression on the psyche of the country; Maupassant, renowned for his tales of suspense and surprise endings, turned his hand to the patriotic short story, creating a number of unforgettable characters.

In the main story, the eponymous Boule de suif, a lady of easy virtue characterizes the attitude found in the heroes of each story; a woman who goes about her job in a professional way albeit looked down by her fellow travellers refuses to sleep with a German officer. Her fellow travellers, initially supportive, soon tire of being holed up in an hotel and subtly put pressure on her so they can continue their journey. The writer uses the story as a pretext to attack the credentials of a number of political foes as he demonstrates the purity of Boule de suif's innocent patriotism.

The accompanying short stories do not have the same depth but all decry the way in which the invader is prepared to take advantage of the subject people. The collection has enormous resonance has France suffered occupation again on two occasions, from 1914-1918 and from 1940-1944/5..

Sometimes we can be put off literature from previous centuries thinking it may be boring or stuffy:   Candide certainly doesn't fit into this category and one could imagine it being made into an action-packed adventure movie complete with multi-levelled video-games.   Published secretly in 1759, Voltaire's work notably attacked the optimistic view of the world put forth by the philosopher Leibniz;  he takes a poke at religion, governments in a satirical way, drawing on events  of the time such as the renowned Portugese earthquake of 1755 and the seven years war to illustrate that there is little room for optimism in the world.

Candide is being brought up in a civilized fashion at the court of Baron Baron Thunder-ten-Tronckh when his world is shattered as he is banished for kissing the beautiful Cunégonde.  There follows the most action packed sequence of events in literature as over thirty episodes Candide, Pangloss his teacher and Cunégonde are woven in and out of a narrative designed to argue philosphical points of view on religious and moral issues.

Said to be the most studied book in French literature, partly in the light of the importance of Voltaire's modern, liberal manner of thinking and partly due to the simple pleasure in reading such an extraordinary story, the novel's level of language is approachable by reasonably able students at advanced level.

Written by 19 year old Faïza Guène, daughter of north African immigrants this account of a year in one girls's life is presented in approachable, ironically humorous chapters rich in detail about what if feels like to belong to a less favoured group in society.

The sarcastic, cynical Doria, thrown into poverty by the departure of her father who hankers after a male son, references popular culture as her main source of metaphor. The language is direct, almost in diary format and is very contemporary in style with some use of verlan.

The narrator savages the heroine as well as the succession of social workers who come to help her and her mother. As she finds stability through her further education course and love from an unexpected direction Doria grudginly accepts what society is doing for her.

Extracts from the book would be useful to illustrate social issues and themes. Faïza Guène's later work builds on Kiffe kiffe demain to provide an alternative view of modern France from the beur perspective.

A novel of its time, Elise ou la vraie vie encapsulates the socio-economic times of the early sixties when the "trente glorieuses" years of expansion were in full swing, car factories were at the heart of the workers' movement and racial tension was at its height as the Algerian war rumbled on.

Setting a love story between a French woman and an Algerian man in that context was a brave move and the drama flows easily from the clash of cultures.   Although rather long for reluctant readers, the novel is a relatively easy ready written in a very matter of fact style.  This book will benefit students with an interest in history and sociology.

Towards the end of his career, Pagnol was asked to write his autobiography in serial format for a magazine.  The result was this charming account of  his idyllic childhood in Marseille and in the surrounding area for  his holiday.

Pagnol captures the nature of childhood and particularly worship of one's father and the way this is gradually tempered by experience.  He also pictures an environment which is in short supply in Provence, the garrigue.

Annie Ernaux over the course of her career as a writer has written extensively about her own life and its dramas in the first person.  She has recently produced a summative volume called Les Années in the third person which pulls everything together.

La place is a very short account of social life in her childhood village from the start of the 20th century, showing how education pulled her out of the class in which she was brought up.

The account of her life charts in particular the way in which she felt she became alienated from her father as she became a teacher and moved away from the village of her birth.  An elegant, short work to study the book nevertheless has much to discuss and covers many themes.

A hilarious romp from beginning to end, particularly if you use the Louis de Funès version of the film to accompany your teaching.

With money and people's attitude towards it having been very much in the public eye over the last few years, it has always been pretty high on people's agenda and L'avare reminds us of its corrupting effect.

Harpagon loves having money and keeping hold of it; he's not too worried about doing anything with it and deplores his own children wasting it. He has plans to marry again to a young woman who unfortunately his own son has his eyes on.

So a typical Molière plot with the highly exaggerated main character, the love sick young people and spirited servants.

No need to worry about the 17th century French, the language is very approachable particularly with the alevelfrench.com materials to help out.

This short novel by Camus is easily the most popular to be studied in UK schools, combining as it does content which is open to interpretation of all kinds with very accessible language.   The first line of the novel "Maman est morte aujourd'hui" is certainly the best known start opening in French and it heralds one of the main issues.   Meursault, the narrator of the story,  is condemned more for his ambivalent attitude towards his mother at her funeral than he is for the  crime he commits at the end of the first half of the book.

Camus portrays a young man, driven by his senses rather than any moral or religious code of behaviour.   Unable or unwilling to make ethical decisions just to keep up appearances Meursault, who likes nothing more than to be left in peace, is drawn into a social situation over which he has no control.  Drawn into a confrontational situation not of his own making, Meursault kills another man, an anonymous Arab and then has to face the consequences.

The second part of the novel demonstrates that the world is not such a free place as Meursault imagined as he confronts the social networks controlling society:  religion, the law and convention.   We begin to empathize as the Meursault, who is the narrator,  realizes to what extent he has proved himself to be inhuman, not by killing an unarmed native inhabitant of this country but by ostensibly lacking respect towards his mother

Colette was a prolific author whose first work was written at the turn of the 19th century under the tutelage of her first husband. The author lived a life as worthy of note as many of the more risqué stars of today and was never far from courting controversy.

Le blé en herbe was a very controversial work in its day due to the overtly sexual nature of the content of the novel.

Phil and Vinca's families have been sharing a holiday home in Britanny since the children were very young. As they reach adolescence Phil and Vinca are becoming attracted to each other and both see a certain inevitability in their eventual marriage. However, teenage hormones being what they are the summer in question is full of challenge for both young people following the arrival of the exotic Madame Dalleray at the villa near the village.

The urgency of teenage feelings is represented in rich, lyrical language overseen by an ominiscient narrator who never tires of describing the emerging physicality of both boy and girl. The natural setting serves as an appropriate backdrop to this enticing love story

The second volume of Marcel Pagnol's Souvenir d'enfance, Le château de ma mère traces the continuing adventures of the family at their residence secondaire in the hills outside Marseille.

The young Marcel encounters and befriends the young Isabelle who enjoys making fun of him and using him to act out her fantasies on.

Much of the book is concerned with the family's journeys to the countryside which are shortened when an ex pupil of Joseph gives the father a key enabling them to take a short cut along the canal into the hills.   This facility turns into a guilt trip as theoretically they shouldn't be doing it.

Pagnol's inimitable ironic humour and his obvious tenderness combine in this engaging tale.

Azouz Begag, son of Algerian parents, lived in a shanty town in the suburbs of Lyon much like the one depicted in Le gone du châaba.  The story depicts the vile conditions experienced by immigrants all over France as immigrant workers contributed to the 30 years of fast economic development.

Despite the miserable conditions in which they live the young immigrants head off to school convinced that they can make something of themselves and this certainly proves to be the case for Begag who after becoming an electrician went into politics and was in government and has become a prolific writer.

Written in very straightforward language the book has much to commend it for study and there is an accompanying film.

A well known broadcaster, Labro turned his attentions to writing novels and Le petit garçon traces his young life until his baccalauréat.

The most interesting part of the autobiographical novel concerns the war years when the family was living in the south west of France;  the father a renowned lawyer had wanted to see his children grow up outside the city.

As the war unfurls we see, through a child's eyes, the mysterious comings and goings at the château;   the innocent viewpoint is particularly poignant.

At almost 350 pages, Le petit garçon, is a challenging but rewarding read, certainly one which native speaker students could undertake with no problem.

A short discursive question and answer book for young adolescents in which the author provides rather formulaic answers to a wide range of questions on the topic of racism, as the title suggests.

The revised editions gives a considerable amount of documentation to back up the author's arguments.

Written in 1942 by Jean Bruller under the pen name of Vercors just as the Germans were beginning to show themselves in their true colours in occupied France this short work was distributed clandestinely.

With a demoralised population increasingly struggling to find the necessities of life, collaboration was very prevalent; this narrative was written with the aim of encouraging the population to resist mentally and spiritually against the occupier even when he showed himself to be reasonable and rational.

The old man and his grand daughter who are treated to the world view of a young German officer who takes refuge infront of the fire demonstrates the changing state of mind of the latter as hie realizes what his associates are really up to in occupied France.

As von Ebrennac the German officer comes to the realisation that the army is there for one reason only the attitude of the young woman also changes, almost imperceptibly.

Despite the apparent lack of action Le silence de la mer has been filmed a number of times yet it is the book that is the most powerful document with its powerful poetic images and spiritual scale.

Arguably Molière's most controversial work, Tartuffe was rewritten after it was banned following its first performance.   Despite his patronage by Louis XIV he could not withstand the wave of criticism from the church;  Tartuffe was originally a cleric.

In the final version of the much changed "approved" edition Tartuffe has infiltrated the household of Orgon, a rich man, convincing him that his supposedly austere ways are the way to God.  Molière takes almost two acts setting the scene getting us used to the character of his antihero before he is introduced onto the stage.

Orgon is insisting that his daughter Marianne marries Tartuffe to whom he has also decided to give his property and his wealth to prove his devotion to God.   Needless to say all comes right in the end after the playwright has delivered his lesson to the hypocritical in society.

Not as farcical as L'avare, for instance, Tartuffe is considered to be one of his more important works not least for the effect on his career and reputation.

First performed in 1948, this political play concerns the end of the war when east European countries were beginning to face up to the realities of their political futures.  As an engaged writer Sartre wanted to bring such situations to the fore for discussion.

The play concerns the chicanery going on as the communist parties tried to wangle their way into power.  Hugo a communist is entrusted with the job of murdering Hoederer a politician who favours a middle way for his country, involving both right and left of the political spectrum

He and his wife Jessica move in on the welcoming Hoederer so that they are well placed to kill him.   When the play starts he is already dead so the question posed by the work is why he was killed not who did it.

Due to its sensitive nature there was considerable reticence to show Les mains sales even in socialist, communist countries.   Students with a political bent will be particularly interested in this work.

Christiane Rochefort's highly ironic and entertaining novel which appeared as the so called "Trente Glorieuses" period of rapid growth was going on, rails against the materialism fuelling this development.

The protagonist Jo, who is also the narrator, spends her early life looking after the latest new baby that the parents have brought into the world in order to benefit from the financial incentives being awarded to encourage the population to grow.

Despite enjoying her school work Jo doesn't get chance to follow this through and she becomes sexualised very young as she seeks affection from the first person to show an interest in her.

There are many amusing episodes in the book although the feeling we are left with is one of upset at seeing a young person wasting her opportunities and following inexorably in the parental footsteps.

No et moi tackles head on one of the open wounds of modern society l'exclusion.   Gifted Lou is insecure in herself, lacking affection from her grieving mother.  Whilst watching trains arriving and observing the display of affection of travellers as they meet their friends and family, Lou meets homeless late-teen No.  She decides to devote her feared class exposé to the subject of homeless young women and engages No in conversation.   After the successful presentation has taken place No disappears.

The rest of novel traces how Lou does her best to help the older girl;  through her innocent eyes we see a world of which we cannot as a society be too proud, a world where the needs of our children are not fully met.  We also see that by helping to heal other people we can heal ourselves, that it is possible to get into a virtuous circle if only we care enough.  The book is realistic in that some problems can be too bad to solve-it has thus important messages to get across to a present day audience.

The short chapters, contemporary topics presented and accessible language make this novel a very approachable one.  The film of the book complements the film well helping students visualize modern French society realistically.

Prévert's extremely moving and meaningful poetry has been appreciated by language learners since it first came out.   The screen writer, director and poet's work is accessible and appealing to adolescent readers who are able to put themselves into the scenarios that the depicted so graphically and romantically.

The prolific Amélie Nothomb is the nearest thing currently to a celebrity author in the French speaking world.  Daughter of a Belgian diplomat and brought up from a young age in Japan her work often has an oriental slant.   During the early 90's Japan was riding high on a booming economy and Japanese language and culture were attracting considerable attention in the west.   Since the subsequent economic slowdown China has tended to take over the mantle but Stupeur et tremblements was written within that context.

The female narrator arrives to begin her new job in a large Japanese corporation high up in a skyscraper overlooking the city.   Right from the start she commits cultural faux pas despite speaking the language fluently;  she cannot quite believe the cultural conventions which underpin this very traditional society.   Dazzled by her stylish  line manager, Amélie does her best to fit in, not realizing the effect her good intentions have on those around her in the pecking order.    The resulting clash of cultures changes her attitude towards a culture she had loved.

Short and approchable this novella has much to recommend it particularly for students with an economic or international bent.

This rich, brooding novel written from the point of view of Thérèse the eponymous "heroine" is firmly set in the south west of France in the forests of the Landes.   Mauriac's characters play out the feminine condition of the time, before nascent feminism has percolated through to the provinces;  at the start of the novel Thérèse has managed to escape conviction for the poisoning of her husband Bernard.   The rest of the novel concentrates on how this point was arrived at in flashback.

For serious students of literature Thérèse Desqueyroux represents a great opportunity to study a wide range of narrative techniques in the context of a thoroughly fascinating novel, not least the male 3rd person narrator telling the story through the female protagonist's view point.

Joseph Joffo decided to write this engaging story of  his wartime experiences as his children were growing up inorder to make them aware of the dangers they could conceivably face at some time in the future.  Looking over the shoulder of his young self, Jo, and brother Maurice the author combines engaging, amusing sequences of dialogue between the boys demonstrating their innoncent view of occurences with comment from the point of view of the wiser adult.

We share with Jo and Maurice the period in history between the imposition of the yellow star and the liberation.  Through the boys experience we learn how a range of colourful people feel about the defeat of France, from the old royalist the comte de V. who drives them to the station in his carriage to a rabid right winger monsieur Mancelier who unwittingly shelters Jo.  What really shines through the whole account of the period is the genetic urge for survival within the family;   the Joffo family has graduated from Russian persecution to being hunted down by French collaborationists and Nazis.

The fact that Joffo manages to make this book so human and so funny is what makes it stand out from the crowd:  there are plentiful books and films out there about the occupation but Un sac de billes has lessons to impart beyond encouraging people to be on the look out for persecution.

Not surprising that this fascinating novel contains no dialogue:  it is written from the perspective of an adult who until his late adolescence lived a lie.   The narrator who has no name, deliberately, describes what he thinks is his family story embracing the love story of his parents who when war came took refuge in the unoccupied zone before returning to Paris to continue where they left off.   Certainly there are puzzling circumstances which populate the narrator's early life like the imaginary brother who alternately protects and torments him.

Things change when the narrator comes home after an altercation at school during the showing of a film about the horror of the concentration camps.  A family friend takes it on herself to gradually reveal the real circumstances of his parents romance and what actually happened when the family took refuge away from Paris.

Philippe Grimbert  is a psychologist and the events related in the story are partially autobiographical.  He was encouraged to write the book when he came across the tomb of a dog belonging to the daughter of the collaborationist French leader Laval;  it occurred to him that many of the Jews who had been deported had left no trace, unlike this pet.  He wanted to ensure that this didn't happen to his own family.

About the play

The cataclysmic Algerian war led by France overshadowed other colonial breakups in the 50s and 60s.   This harrowing play by the celebrated Antillais poet and playwright Aimé Césaire takes on the story of Patrice Lumumba, the first president of an independent Congo.  The play has recently been put on in in Paris and in London (in English) to great acclaim having been written shortly after the events it depicts.

The play charts the rise of Lumumba from a travelling beer salesman turned champion of independence and his bumpy ride through independence right in the middle of the Cold War.  Having gained its independence, outside interference destabilizes the country leading to anarchy; western powers get involved as they fear Lumumba getting into bed with the Russians.

Written in colourful language rich in local vocabulary the play is easily accessible to more able students who will benefit from the DVD of the recent Parisian production and a radio play of the work.

Fouad Laroui is a popular novelist and poet from the Atlas mountains.  A child prodigy at this primary school his teacher ensured that he gained a scholarship at the French Lycée Lyautey in Casablanca.

Leaving his family behind him at the age of ten he turns up at the lycée with a battered suitcase and as the youngest student in the school and a native Moroccan to boot he has a hard time of it.

Initially feeling alienated from his classmates, by dint of his desire to read and learn, he gradually becomes accepted.

A heartwarming story with a lot to commend it to present day readers who often don't realize the trauma of young people operating in an essentially foreign culture.

Antoine de St Exupéry seamlessly combined his career as a pilot on long distance routes between France and Africa and in South America with his more successful career as a writer. After flying sorties for the air force as the German army invaded in 1940, St Exupéry left for New York where after writing Pilote de Guerre recounting his experiences over northern France, he was persuaded to write a children's tale.

Armed with a paintbox with which he paints his own illustrations St Ex comes up with Le petit prince which at least partly helps him deal with his current preoccupations, making up with his delectable South American wife Consuelo and getting himself back in the air. Published initially in the US in a luxurious version for children the book is published after the author's tragic death in France.

Although apparently aimed at children, the emotional depth of the short work which also takes a swipe at the materialism and self obsession of modern society, can also be read as a work of spiritual renewal by "les grandes personnes".

This short very humanistic novel about a young boy of Jewish background who befriends a muslim shopkeeper traces the relationship between the two as it develops over time.

Although short, this magical work is engaging and is deceptively deep in the philosphical issues about which it encourages discussion.

A profoundly optimistic work the work encourages us to look at the positives which link multicultural groups together rather than the negatives which might separate them. This is not laboured but does form an intrinsic part of the structure of the novel where the whole nature of our identity as a human being is questioned.

This book is a very worthy title to study and a film of the work has been made recently starring Omar Sharif.

Although ostensibly about the nature of faith and how to approach death, this very short book is also strangely life-affirming. Eric Emmanuel-Schmitt's 10 year old protagonist, Oscar, realizes that he is going to succumb to his leucaemia as he undergoes treatment in a children's hospital. However, the fantastic imaginative support he receives from his "dame rose" hospital visitor Mamie-Rose enables him to climb onto a spiritual plain from which he is able to make the transition from terrified child to mentally prepared adult. The text is essentially composed of fourteen letters written by Oscar, initially a non-believer, to God and analysing his last days. The letters, at once, dramatic, amusing and heart-wrenching are utterly engaging. Study of this book would be an excellent individual activity for gifted and talented children at GCSE, a suitable "transition" text or piece of individual study to be presented in the oral examination

Set in the Alps in the mid 50's in a small hamlet at the foot of the mountains this novel is a wonderful study of the rapport between two brothers-one a hardworking ex-mountain guide who is now mentally disabled following an accident and his younger brother who is a lazy chancer.

The younger brother is anxious to sell up and abandon the rugged mountain farming life something which his brother is dead against. The book demonstrates the rising poverty in the countryside at the height of the rural exodus when peasants deserted their farms for the cities in droves.

Everything changes when an aeroplane en route from India to London crashes high up on the mountain top and an expedition is sent up to bring down the mail. We witness an epic struggle between man and mountain and man and man as the tension ramps up.

There is plenty to discuss in terms of plot, character and background in this novel which is still very popular in France. Although not currently on any set text it would beautifully complement a regional study of the Alps.

Gide's short nouvelles such as Isabelle, La porte étroite and La symphonie pastorale offer the reader timeless narratives in which the protagonists wrestle with their own angst, moral ambiguities and religious beliefs to attempt to achieve happiness.

A protestant pastor rescues blind girl Gertrude from an impoverished background and awakens her mind to language and spirituality in a remarkably short space of time.

Oblivious of the effect his relationship with the young woman is having on his wife and family, the pastor struggles increasingly with the moral decisions he has to make.

Seen through the prism of a civilisation a hundred years after this book was written and where amorality is widespread, this novel offers the basis for interesting debate on the way we lead our lives, our moral decisions and the devastating effects our own self interest can have on others.

Gide used these nouvelles to help him rationalise his own psychological and moral issues and they represent a meaningful and valuable route into the study of French literature.
